Curious how our mattresses are made?

Here's our basic recipe - which then is modified depending on the type of mattress you've chosen.

We start with a 520 coil count spring made of tempered steel and manufactured in the USA.

We then attach a layer of needle felted wool (grown and produced in Ohio) which provides an excellent base and firmness upon which to build our mattress.

Then we add 3-4 layers of organic cotton batting that is grown and produced in the USA.

A quilted top layer consisting of organic cotton fabric, organic wool, and organic cotton fabric (all produced in the USA and quilted in Ohio) is then attached to the springs.

The other side of the mattress gets the same treatment in construction and the side border (which is 100% organic cotton fabric and batting) is attached with bias tape to the sides and then sewn with the sewing machine.

Organic Cotton and Natural Wool work beautifully together in our Organic Mattresses. Our mattresses are completely free of chemical residues and odors and there is no off-gassing. Instead you can sink into a truly "pure" embrace of soft, clean cotton and wool.

Why Organic Cotton?

100% Pure Cotton appears on many labels, on many products. But the fact that the item maybe made of 100% cotton does not mean that it is "pure". In fact, conventionally grown cotton is one of the most highly processed and environmentally damaging crops grown.

Pesticides, herbicides, defoliants and synthetic fertilizers are an integral part of conventionally grown cotton. As is typical with the use of these substances on any crop, a very small proportion actually reaches the plant - the vast majority ends up in the ground and/or swept into streams that eventually become part of the water we drink. In the ground, they create "dead soil" -- soil devoid of any microbes or insects - beneficial or otherwise. In our water they pose health risks to humans as well as to wildlife.

Conventionally grown cotton is then typically dyed and treated with a variety of additional toxic chemicals.

Organic cotton, in contrast, is grown on land that has been free of pesticides, etc. for at least three years. It is grown using sustainable methods such as crop rotation, introduction of beneficial insects and human intervention rather than chemical intervention for weed control. When cotton is grown organically it doesn't hurt the humans who work on it, nor threaten the surrounding ecosystem.

Organic cotton products are wonderful for anyone, and particularly valuable for people suffering from chemical sensitivities.

What's So Great About Wool?

BAAAA....Wool is an all natural, breathable fiber with a unique capacity to regulate moisture and heat. Natural wool filling is exceptionally comfortable, light and fluffy. You stay warm without a ton of weight!

Imagine wool as light and fluffy as cotton candy -- that's what it looks like after being carded. Our natural wool is 1 inch thick and has not been carbonized to get the bits of chafe and twigs out of the fibers.

Because our natural wool is quilted to the organic cotton it stays in one place and keeps the nice light loft structure for years.

Wool naturally removes moisture by evaporation, wicking it away from your body. So it is perfect all 4 seasons! Wool is naturally resistant to dust mites, mildew, and mold, providing relief to those who suffer from allergies. It is also water and static resistant, and naturally fire resistant, so there's no need for potentially toxic flame retardants.

What About Latex?

Latex is derived from a biodegradable product: the serum from rubber trees. Latex is hypoallergenic, and breathes to keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Bacteria, mildew, and mold cannot live in latex foam.

In mattresses latex adds a unique kind of support. It "absorbs" movement so that when 2 people are in a bed and one moves, the other will be less disturbed.

A Choice

In our increasingly polluted, chemically toxic world, people are fighting back. Our mattresses are PBDE free, boric acid free and formaldehyde free. In other words, all natural. Please note, if you are in California, you will need a prescription for this mattress. We will not use the chemicals necessary to meet the CA TB603 regulations. We're understanding more and more that our bodies interact with the environment and that we need to minimize our ingestion and absorption of toxic substances. Once you've experienced an organic mattress you'll never go back!
